A recent New York Times article ─“Empathy’s Natural, But Nurturing It Helps” (February 16, 2010)─ shows not only the importance of the quality called empathy and the necessary conditions for its development in children, but also the role of parents and teachers in its nurturance.

The Community Listening Forums were completed with vigorous and substantive participation by parents, teachers, alumni, trustees, and former trustees. In early February, 29 eighth graders, along with chaperones Chris Corrigan, Aaron Brill, and Ashley Harsh, embarked on a 10-day journey to Puerto Rico. For some, this marked their first opportunity to travel outside of the continental United States. For others, it marked the first journey without family. As the students gathered in the San Francisco Airport, many expressed a nervous excitement about the upcoming adventures they were sure to experience. After a long day of travel, the group arrived in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The student congress has been working on many things over the past few weeks to help in the Haiti relief effort. At Concert for Community, we raised $237. All of our donations to Haiti are going to the Sirona Cares Foundation, which provides money, health care, and homes for children who have lost their parents in Haiti.

Call a gathering of the Day School community to generate ideas and there will be a lot of them! It’s no surprise, then, that the strategic plan task force members now have hundreds of ideas to sort through as they develop priorities for the School going forward. The School hosted a series of “listening forums” over the past two weeks to solicit ideas from community members as it starts the process of creating a new strategic plan.
