Karen Richards, Art Teacher
This summer at Art Forts we built the Land of Fortutopia. Fortutopia was created by of six adult artists and 30 young artists. In five days these artists designed and built forts made of wood, fabric, and found objects. These forts resembled creatures, shoes, radio stations, robots, waves, cars, tents, and a gigantic piece of cheese to name a few!! Artists perfected their sewing and woodworking skills, designing and creating personal banners and mailboxes. Fortutopia citizens used their self-made phone and mailing systems to communicate between neighborhoods.
Visiting artists included SFDS Alum Harrison Bartlett who recently returned from the Swimming Cities of Serenissima boat project at the Venice Biennale. This is his fourth year on the Junk Boats, where he builds and performs while touring on waterways including the Mississippi, the Hudson, and the Adriatic. Seventh grader Jackson also joined the Art Forts team, as a counselor-in-training, inspiring younger students with his imaginative ideas.
