Welcome back! To borrow a phrase from the Andy Williams’ classic Christmas song, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” No, I’m not referring to the holiday season, but that magical time known as Back-to-School. Gone are the bored, glazed eyes and constant sibling nitpicking that peak about the third week of August in our household. Instead, I see bright, happy faces that are excited about new and old friends, learning, lockers, and lunch. They’re happier and I’m happier.

Gems from Alfie Kohn’s “Beyond Threats and Bribes”

On March 24, our local SPEAK chapter (Speakers for Parents, Educators and Knowledge) hosted a lecture by well-known author Alfie Kohn. Kohn has written a number of books on education, parenting and human behavior and his latest talk addressed the timeless question, “What can we do to help children grow into good people?” He shared ideas that extend “beyond threats and bribes,” and suggested ways to work with children rather than doing them to them, and for making sure they know our care for them is unconditional.
