Homa Hanjani

We have just welcomed an amazing group of new students and families to our community, which makes it hard to believe that it is, once again, time to begin admission season.
Can you remember the time when you first learned about SFDS? For most of us it was not right at the [...]

Powerful Habits of Mind

Powerful Habits of Mind

In the 21st century, essential habits of mind such as capacity for sustained effort, perseverance, resilience in the face of difficulty, and the skill to engage and organize complex learning tasks will enable our children to have courage in the face of confusing challenges and to think outside of the box.

Annual Report on End of Year Tests and Assessments

Annual Report on End of Year Tests and Assessments

Standardized achievement tests such as ERB tests provide useful information to both the school and families, but it is important to understand the implications of this type of testing. At SFDS, we believe that a comprehensive assessment must include a variety of techniques not limited to standardized testing alone*, but also including an analysis of a student’s portfolio of his/her actual school work, direct observation of teaching and curriculum reviews benchmarked against state and national standards.

SFDS and California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS)

At SFDS, as in every independent school, teachers and administrators have the freedom to shape the program, practice, and methods of the school, but every 6 years we have the responsibility to explain and justify those choices in order to remain members of the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS).

Thank you from the Director of Admissions

Thank you from the Director of Admissions

As the admission season comes to an end, I would like to sincerely thank all of you for helping us share our school with the larger San Francisco community. Interview after interview, I have heard how comforting it is to walk through this school and interact with compassionate and warm parents and staff. Our strong sense of community is deeply felt by all who visit.

The following recaps the first half of our discussion, and next month’s blog will focus on creating and defining the mindset needed in order to persevere in the face of an especially daunting or challenging task.

“Raise Your Hand” if you love Breakthrough

“Raise Your Hand” if you love Breakthrough

There is a saying that goes “when one teaches, two learn.” This lesson could not be demonstrated more aptly than through the exemplary Breakthrough program here at SF Day School. Breakthrough harnesses children’s passion to learn and thrives on the power of students teaching students, to a great deal of success.
