Wendy Miller and Barbara Abbott
Community Service for Families Co-Chairs
We are really excited to be heading up Community Service for Families this year. We each have two boys at the Day School and a committee like this helps us get involved in the community and learn more about non-profits in the city. Most of our children don’t understand that San Francisco is actually a very “poor” city. 1 in 4 people in the city, versus a national average of 1 in 8, are food insecure — meaning that they don’t always know where their next meal will come from. We feel like we have identified some great volunteer opportunities suitable for the whole family. By participating, our children will learn that they too can make a difference.
Our first event, Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD), began in 1985 and has grown into a huge annual affair. Every state with a coastline participates, including the Great Lakes states. Even some inland states clean their river and lake shores. The one-day cleanup is international—at last count, over 60 nations participated—and is called the largest volunteer day on the planet. During the 25th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, tens of thousands of Californians will gather along the beaches, shorelines, and inland waterways of the state to clear away the debris that has been deposited over the past year.
During the fall, we will also have volunteer opportunities at the San Francisco Food Bank and Ronald McDonald House.
Remember, no prior experience is necessary for our events; the whole family can participate and I guarantee you will leave feeling like you have just made a big difference in the city of San Francisco. In addition, if you know of a great non-profit in the city that would welcome Day School volunteers, please contact Wendy Miller or Barbara Abbott.
