First Grade Entomologists

The first grade has had a great time opening the doors to our new classroom Entomology Labs.  In collaboration with Eleanor Coffelt in the science department, the first graders have been looking closely at different groups of arthropods.  Students have learned the classification characteristics of the five subphylum’s of arthropods (Insects, Chilopoda (centipedes), Diplopoda (millipedes), Arachnids and Crustaceans).  Students practiced sorting pictures of arthropods into the classification group to which they belong.  During learning stations, students also “work” in the classroom laboratory using microscopes, watching short insect video clips, and observing the live insect populations of silk worms, ants, slugs, and ladybugs. The bug study is also being integrated into various art, math, and writing projects.
