Our SFDS 2011-2012 Student Congress was sworn in during a recent student assembly. Although we are extremely excited and proud of this year’s student leaders, we discussed the fact that all students still have a job to do, regardless of whether they have an “official” role in Student Congress. Here are speech excerpts from our co-majority leaders, Alex and Antonia.
Alex, who initially stated he was ‘going off script,’ tearing his speech in half, before pulling another copy out of his pocket and confessing that his memory wasn’t that perfect:
“I am talking to you today about why you should elect me, over these other fine people, to be co-majority leader. Of course I already know who I’m going to vote for, I just have to convince you. Now I’d like to take a moment to outline my good qualities. 1) I’m good at working with other people. 2) I’d like to think that people like to work with me towards a common goal. 3) I will always be open-minded, no matter what comes up. 4) I will try to be unbiased as possible except for when a specific opinion is asked of me. 5) I will never act like a leader in the congress because the co-majority leader is not one. 6) I will make sure that no one grade or person gets any more favor than the other grades. 7) I will try to keep the congress as productive as possible. And finally 
I’d like the congress to be happy and enthusiastic this year. It would have been nice for you to memorize why you should vote for me, but unless you’d like to memorize the acronym WPOUNLEPH I’m afraid you’re out of luck. I’m kind, motivated, and I like to work with other people. I don’t think you need much more than that.”
Antonia, who sang her speech while playing her guitar:
“I’m sad to say, it’s my last year at SF Day.
Before I leave though I wanna help the school grow.
There’s an empty space I’d like to fill, I could represent your will.
Prior to my leavin’, I wanna share what I believe in.
What we do and what we say, when we work and when we play,
while we’re here we are reflections of our school, don’t you think that’s pretty cool?
Working together as a team, we can realize our dreams.
I have ideas I’d share with you, and I know you have them too.
We can put our heads together and achieve what we endeavor
Vote for me and this’ll be the best year ever!
