Join us in commemorating another year of breakthroughs!
On Wednesday, February 3, Richard Carranza, newly appointed Deputy Superintendent for the San Francisco Unified School District, and Daniel Lurie, Founder and CEO of Tipping Point Community, will discuss avenues for increasing educational opportunity. The event, entitled “Raise Your~Hand,” will take place at San Francisco Day School, and is hosted by Breakthrough San Francisco, the Day School’s outreach program. Breakthrough provides academic enrichment to fifth and sixth grade students from public schools in San Francisco, while training outstanding high school and college students for careers in education.
Previously Deputy Superintendent of the Northwest Region of the Clark County School District as well as a school principal and teacher, Carranza now serves as SFUSD’s Deputy Superintendent for Instruction, Innovation, and Social Justice and is charged with increasing academic achievement districtwide. Carranza will address issues confronting the district today, strides made toward goals outlined in the district’s strategic plan, and the future of public education in San Francisco.
Joining Mr. Carranza will be Daniel Lurie, Founder and CEO of Tipping Point Community. Tipping Point makes strategic investments in charter schools and in non-profits that provide educational, family, employment and housing services. Dubbed “The Do-Right Man” by 7×7 Magazine, Lurie will discuss Tipping Point’s successes and the importance of a large-scale effort to eradicate poverty. Lurie was recently interviewed, along with Board member Ronnie Lott, on NPR’s Forum.
David E. Jackson, Head of School at San Francisco Day School, and Andy Shin, Executive Director of Breakthrough San Francisco, will also make comments.
Invitations will be mailed mid-January. For more information, please visit www.sfds.net/breakthroughsanfrancisco/ or contact Event Co-Chairs Barbara Abbott or Lea Stevens.
