Second Graders Explore Nonfiction

The All About Books are an opportunity for the writer’s to write in a new genre, nonfiction.  We read a variety of books by Gail Gibbons modeling the All About Book style. Together we brainstormed different topics that the students knew a lot about and then individually they used their think pads to write down three possible topics. They “tried on” each one of the three topics with their writing partners and chose the one that they could write the most about.  Once the students made a decision about their All About Book topic, they began organizing their sections by creating a table of contents. We are in the midst of creating these books and the buzz in the room during Writer’s Workshop is one of productivity.
