SEED: Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity

No one said raising kids was going to be easy, but there are moments when it feels downright impossible. A few difficult moments were when my oldest son Diego (now 11 grade) started kindergarten at SFDS, he came home from school and asked, “Why did ‘so and so’ say you can’t have two moms?” And when my second son Jono asked, “Why is our house so small?  Why don’t we get to go to Hawaii for break?” And when my youngest son Julian stated, “There are no brown kids in my class.” During these moments, I wish I had a group of other adults to talk with, a like SEED.

SEED is a series of monthly discussions for parents or guardians to discuss topics of social importance with a focus on raising children to be culturally competent, self-aware, and caring individuals. Through reading, activities, films, and discussion we will explore the following and more:

  • Poverty in America
  • Why is it so difficult to discuss race?
  • Immigration myths and realities
  • Gender expression in children
  • Skills of respectful communication
  • Cross-cultural effectiveness skills
