Student Bake Sale Raises $1400

Inspired by the film, Brownstone to Red Dirt, sixth graders organized on a bake sale that raised $700 (which was matched by a parent for a total of $1400).  This money will be donated to Copper Pot Pictures who will use it to build a school for children in Sierra Leone and a library for children in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. The impetus for the bake sale was a trip to the SF International Film Festival where students watched the documentary film Brownstones to Red Dirt, which tells the story of a pen pal program between a group of at risk youths in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn and a group of civil war orphans in Freeport, Sierra Leone.  In the film, the children Brooklyn are so moved by courage and struggles of their pen pals that, despite their own lack of resources, they work to raise money for them. SFDS students came back inspired to do their part to help!
