Each year, UNICEF sponsors a “Trick or Treat” campaign to turn Halloween into an opportunity to make a lifesaving difference in the lives of children around the world. This fundraising effort has served as UNICEF’s original Kids Helping Kids campaign and has been in place for more than sixty years. As one of the longest-running youth initiatives in America, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has raised more than $164 million to-date.
This year, a group of SFDS students from grades 3 through 7 decided to participate. Thanks to their collective hard work, they were able to raise more than $1000 in support of Trick or Treat for Unicef. Although this was indeed a group effort, special thanks go to our 5th grade “power collectors”: Zoe, Pilar, and Kyra.
Most compelling for our students was the concrete information regarding the power of their donation:
$25 Can provide pencils and notebooks for 52 children.
$35 Can supply 101 packs of water purification tablets (50 tablets per pack) to provide clean water for children.
$50 Can vaccinate 85 children against polio for life.
$75 Can provide 3 first aid kits containing items such as gauze, bandages, soap, and adhesive tape.
$100 Can immunize 357 children against measles for life.
$150 Can supply 24 insecticide-treated mosquito nets to protect children from malaria.
$280 Can provide enough basic family water kits to meet the needs of 20 families during an emergency.
$400 Can supply 16 cartons of high energy biscuits specially developed for malnourished children.
$805 Can provided 696 HIV tests to make sure HIV-positive mothers receive the medicine they need to prevent the transmission of the disease to their children.
$1,397 Can pay for a sturdy tent for use as a school or clinic in an emergency.
