First graders are busy receiving, sorting, and delivering mail all around the school. There is a post office in both first-grade classrooms, where students and teachers can “purchase” stamps and mail their letters to all members of the SFDS community. The first graders take turns performing the different responsibilities that go along with running a post office. Recently, they had the opportunity to see how the real thing runs when they visited the post office on Geary Street.

Just as Dr. King passed on positive messages for change in a community to children, the fifth graders encouraged the first graders to build community awareness. Together the students settled on a positive message to pass on to their neighbors and created a picket sign. Some popular slogans included: “Save paper!” “Reduce, reuse, recycle“ “Carpool, walk or ride a bike!,” and “Respect your neighbors!” After the signs were completed, the students took to the streets, proudly waving their signs and calling out their messages to passersby. The community cheered on our students with many friendly car horn honks and even a few bicycle bell rings.

Once a popular game, dominoes present a visual number investigation for first graders. They comprise a set, a suit and a symbol. Using observation, matching, comparing and counting, students have been developing their problem solving skills. In this photo, students have uncovered the triangular pattern resulting from ordering one set of dominoes and the “pyramid” using two sets of dominoes.
