The varsity girls soccer team won the league championship, 3-2, against a tough and hitherto undefeated competitor MCDS. It was our second league championship in a row. Congratulations, Phins!

SFDS Wins Volleyball Championship

It was a tense moment in the match: the score was 23 -23 and Coach O’Brien called a needed timeout to settle down the team, refocus them, and remind them to make a good pass, set it up, and hit it─just as the team had been doing the entire match. It was quiet in the huddle when the normally quiet Sam S. stepped forward.

“We are not going to lose,” Sam said. “We are winning this game right now.”

The boys knew it and turned and walked out on the court and promptly won the next two points to complete our first boys’ varsity volleyball championship. It was a wonderful and fitting moment to an incredible season.

This group of eighth and seventh graders came to the first practice in February ready to learn the game of volleyball and come together as a team. Several of them had played last season on the first junior varsity team to win a pennant in the sport. The core of this team was focused on winning a varsity championship and a banner for our gym. With several first-time players, the team worked on skills and began to win each match. In fact, this group of boys won match after match and dropped only two games in an undefeated season. But the team truly came together in the last two matches of the season. Each player supported everyone on the court. The boys on the bench cheered every play, good or bad. They picked each other up, and when starters came out new players came in to try their best. They were truly working as a team.

Coaches Mary O’Brien and Joel Young saw this growth in the last week of the season and knew that this team could all the way. We were proud of their growth, focus, and teamwork. They were so fun to coach and we commend all their hard work and dedication. This group set the standard that the core of seventh graders, who will be next year’s varsity, will want to continue next volleyball season. So let’s hear it for the San Francisco Day School volleyball champions of 2010!

Varsity Soccer Dominates Final Game of Regular Season, 3-0

The boys varsity soccer team capped off an incredible regular season with a win over the Stuart Hall Knights. The game was at Crocker-Amazon, an astroturf field that worked to the Phin’s advantage. Due to our superior ball control and possession skills, we made Stuart Hall have to play on their side of the field for the almost entire game. Terrific plays by the defense and offense lead to a 3-0 end, finishing the year with a 6-2 record. We could not have gotten this far without the help of our loyal volunteers and fans, and we will hope you continue to support us in our playoff run. Go SF Day!

Boys Suffer Disappointing Loss to MCDS

Friday’s game was a disappointing loss for the entire team. With many injuries, the teams didn’t have the usual reserves to win the game. We were able to net one goal, but because of some high chips that couldn’t be seen in the setting sun, MCDS was able to score two goals. Julian and JP persevered through their injuries, but the team effort wasn’t enough to score a final needed goal. Sadly, MCDS beat the soccer team, but hopefully we’ll be able to beat them in the playoffs!

JV Girls Beat Head-Royce, 2-1

The girls JV team played a great volleyball game against Head-Royce. It was a very close game but we managed to beat them in three games. Our team is still undefeated since fifth grade and we hope to keep it that way until our volleyball career as SFDS is over and we take our steps into high school. Hopefully you can come to our next game!

Varsity Soccer Boys Trounce Head-Royce, 2-0

It was an exciting day for the varsity boys soccer team. Coming from a field trip to the Mission, most of the team and parents were afraid of the boys getting cramps from the great amounts of food we ate; surprisingly, it seemed as if we were boosted by the delicious Latin feast. Remembering our last year’s defeat in the championship gave us more ambition to win the game.

When the game began, our outstanding passing, dribbling, and effort and faithfulness as a team helped us pull through to the end. In the end, we ended up beating the Head-Royce Jayhawks, 2-0. Hopefully we will pull past the playoffs and
into the championships! Go Phins!

JV Girls Beat FAIS, 2-0

The JV girls beat FAIS in two games. The final score in the first round was 25 to 6, with SFDS winning the set. In the second round, we won 25 to 16. We felt we could have had fewer drops on our side, but overall we worked hard as a team and supported each other.

JV Girls Trounce Brandeis, 2-0

The girls JV volleyball team beat Brandeis, 2-0. It was definitely a game of serving. Many players had wonderful serves. In the first game, SFDS won by a lot, but in the second game Brandeis gave more of a challenge. However, SFSD came up on top. We won the match and hopefully will continue to win the rest of our games!

Cross Country’s Fun in Sun Against FAIS & Brandeis

It was a hot sunny day at Julius Kahn on Tuesday, October 6, when the SFDS cross country team raced against FAIS and Brandeis. The course at Julius Kahn was very challenging due to the sand trails, the rolling hills and the stairs! SFDS girls ran a great race, with our runners coming in second, third, and other very high scores. Our boys team also did great. It was a fun afternoon. Next race will be at Burke’s. Hope to see you there!
