On Friday, May 7, 2010, the Dolphin varsity girls soccer team beat MCDS, 3-2, in a fast-paced, exciting game, to become league champions.
This marks the second year in a row that SFDS has won the girls soccer championship—the first back-to-back of any girls’ championships.
Coming into this game, SFDS had lost one game—(2-3) to MCDS—while MCDS came into the championship undefeated. The wind was a factor, but no one realized how big a factor until the second half when the teams switched sides. MCDS got two goals in the first half with the wind helping them, but the Dolphins were not out of the game yet.
As the saying goes, “2-0 is the most dangerous score”—for the team that’s ahead. Coach Steve Roberts told the team that all we needed was one goal to get “back in the game.” In the second half, we came out swinging. We now had the wind carrying our clearances and shots much farther.
Seven minutes into the half, we got our first goal, which gave everyone a boost of energy. Our second goal followed moments later. One pass resulted in a quick scramble that produced a goal when one of our players took advantage and kicked the ball straight into the back of the net.
Our third goal came when one player broke away and, running toward the goal with defenders closing in, spied the chance to launch the ball. It sailed over the goalie’s head into the upper left-hand side of the net.
MCDS seemed stunned. After that, all we had to do was keep MCDS from scoring. Our defenders and goalkeeper worked hard to keep their corner kicks from going near our goal. In a risky play, our keeper came out of the goal to kick the ball away before MCDS had an opportunity to get a goal.
The game continued to be a push to the end, but we were able to hold MCDS off while getting a few more shots. The game ended 3-2, a victory for SFDS.
It was a day to remember. One of excitement and exuberance, teamwork and determination. Congratulations, Phins!
